Differentiated Reading Instruction

Before you read on . . .

How do you rate yourself as a reader? Check one:

I seldom read for pleasure because reading takes too much effort.

I seldom read for pleasure because reading is boring.

I sometimes read for pleasure, especially a few favorite authors or magazines.

I look forward to reading and make time for it.

Reading is one of my favorite pastimes. I’m usually partway through at least one book.

How do students view reading? Here are some comments from some struggling sixth-grade readers:

It’s kinda boring just sitting there and doing work. Like in a reading class we’ll have to read a book and then write a paper on it, read a book, write a paper, like that? If I get into it and it’s a good book, I won’t stop reading. I’ll walk with the book, sittin’ there reading it. When it’s a book I’m into, but I almost like talk to the person in the book, you know what I’m saying.

It’s like at the beginning of the year they place you in a level and then once you’re at that level they’re not gonna let you go nowhere unless you show them if you’re higher. And sometimes even if you ask them and show them sometimes they won’t even pay attention.
